About 1996, Samick may have moved production of this brand to Indonesia. In 1990, the name was bought by Samick (Korea). As noted, production of their own instruments stopped in 1875. It began as the Otto Altenburg Piano Co., named after Fredericks brother, and every succeeding generation has had. Later they added other piano brands to their retail stock. The Altenburg Piano House was started in 1847 by Frederick Altenburg in Germany. Seeing a growing market, Altenburg opened a retail store while continuing to manufacture pianos. Things went south about a year later, though Frederick (and possibly Otto) continued to build pianos.
In 1868, Frederick formed a partnership with Edward Ehrlich (I don't know what happened to Otto) and built pianos under the F. They emigrated to America and opened their factory in New York in about 1865 and built pianos until 1875.
